Efforts to convert American Indians had limited results in the colonial period. There was general distrust and a belief that the missionaries posed a threat to traditional culture and leadership—a concern that was not unfounded. Language and cultural differences proved a significant hurdle, and the inability of many early missionaries to converse fluently with potential converts limited both the effectiveness of their evangelization and the commitments of convents who may have only received a superficial explanation of the Christian faith. One group in which early missionaries found some success was younger females, notably girls, teenagers, and women in their childbearing years, especially within native groups that lived a more sedentary lifestyle, particularly those living in towns.²⁰
